The Layout of your garden depends on what is required to support your family with adequate fruit and vegetables for summer and winter living. The cost is largely that of our own labour. A raised bed allows work with less bending and can be worked from all sides, also from a stool or wheelchair.
Soil is formed by the gradual breaking up of the rocks of the earth's crust. Different rocks produce soils with different characteristics, which are vital to the gardener when he/she comes to cultivating them - e.g. Sandy, Clay, Loamy, Chalky, or Peaty.
The elements which provide the plants with the nutrients they need to grow are present in all these soils, but only in varying degrees... This all translates to a lot of digging. Nevertheless, it is perfectly possible to grow good healthy crops of vegetables without digging at all!
Compost is the Ultimate Garden Fertilizer and a long term investment. It contains all the nutrients a living plant needs and delivers them in a slow release manner over a period of years. You can sow and plant in 100% Soilless Organic Matter (compost), or a balanced mix with soil, sand, and sawdust, which is produced on site, up to the height of the raised beds (from 30cm to 70cm). Again we produce the compost for "nought" (except for our own time), The "No Digging" method avoids weed seeds, which have been lying dormant in the soil, being brought to the surface where they spring to life. We allow on metre wide paths to accommodate a wheelbarrow or wheelchair.
All vegetable waste from the kitchen yard and garden are recycled. This is the raw material to make compost. The compost encourages a larger population of beneficial soil microorganisms, which control harmful microorganisms. It also fosters healthy plant growth, and healthy plants are better able to resist pests.
Our Dual Rainwater Home and Garden Harvesting Systems with underground located tanks from 1,000 to 6,000 litre capacity means we can use rainwater exclusively for our garden irrigation. Additionally we make our own organic pest sprays.
